Grants - Awards

The Education Fund was initially established using donations and proceeds of the GNSI Annual Auction. The funds are available for use in educational programs, activities, events, and resources. Applications for funding are reviewed by the Education Fund Committee, comprised of GNSI members appointed by the Education Director.

Funds are awarded on the basis of merit, and may be either the full amount requested or a portion thereof in the form of Grants and/or Seed Money, by decision of the Committee. Past awards have ranged from $200-$1500. The types of funded activities to date include lectures, workshops, exhibits, outreach open houses, etc. All funded activities are are reviewed for a public outreach component beyond Guild membership.

The AOI Illustration Awards will promote exceptional work by illustrators and present illustration as a major force in global visual culture. Lanzendorf PaleoArt Prize

The John J. Lanzendorf PaleoArt Prize was created in October 1999 to recognize outstanding achievement in paleontological scientific illustration and naturalistic art. Annual awards are supported through the generosity of PaleoArt collector John J. Lanzendorf. We are pleased to announce that the Lanzendorf PaleoArt Prize is now supplemented by the National Geographic Digital Modeling and Animation Award. International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge

Researchers are generating mind-boggling volumes of data at exponentially increasing rates. The ability to process that information and display it in ways that enhance understanding is an increasingly important aspect of the way scientists communicate with each other and—especially—with students and the general public. That's why, for the past 8 years, Science and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) have co-sponsored annual challenges to promote cutting-edge efforts to visualize scientific data, principles, and ideas.

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Bartels Science Illustration Internships

Description: The Cornell Lab of Ornithology will offer two Bartels Science Illustration Internships during 2011–12, to be held at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, New York. Recipients will work on a project illustrating birds, wildlife, and/or plants for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s print publications, outreach materials, and web sites. Interns will work on projects that help the Lab achieve its mission, and these projects often result in publication of the intern’s work.

The John Burroughs List of Nature Books for Young Readers

The John Burroughs Association is dedicated to promoting the spirit and teaching of John Burroughs (1837-1921), of some of his most appropriate nature essays for children, and several anthologies that were published and used during his lifetime as readers in schools across America. In 1988, the Association inaugurated an annual list for young readers that honors Burroughs’ efforts to instill in young people a love for nature and their curiosity about the environment. Since the list began, the Association has selected more than 150 books nominated by publishers of individually recognized authors and co-authors, author-illustrators, author-photographers, illustrators, and photographers.

John H. Daniels Fellowships

National Sporting Library & Museum Seeks Applicants for 2011-2012 John H. Daniels Fellowships

The National Sporting Library & Museum seeks applications for the John H. Daniels Fellowship, which supports scholars doing research in the area of horse and field sports. Applications must be postmarked no later than February 1, 2011. The John H. Daniels Fellowship supports scholars at the NSL&M for periods of two weeks to one year. Applicants must submit a formal application demonstrating how they will utilize the NSL&M’s collections of books, periodicals, manuscripts, archival materials, and fine art. A special fellowship will be offered this year for topics relating to field sports and conservation.
