What We Collect: Recent Art Acquisitions, 2007–2012

This selection of recent acquisitions to the Art Department of the Hunt Institute, from the early 19th century through the present, will be placed in the context of the Institute’s collection practices and the history of botanical illustration. Whether working alongside botanists for scientific and horticultural publications or preparing artworks for collectors, galleries or commercial use, artists throughout the centuries have added their individual perspectives to portraying plants and have made lasting contributions to the botanical record and the history of art.

The Science Illustration Graduate Certificate Program at California State University, Monterey Bay is proud to announce the 24th Annual Illustrating Nature Exhibit. The great success of our scientific illustration trips was the incentive for us to offer in 2013, not just one but three 11 days 10 nights trips, the first from May 16th to May 26th , the second from May 29th to June 8th. and the third from June 10th to 20th, 2013.

The 2013 Education Series Workshop will be held May 31 through June 3, 2013 at Reiman Gardens in Ames, Iowa.

The workshop will be taught by orchid artist Carol Woodin and will feature slipper orchids native to Iowa. Participants will work in watercolor and will have an opportunity to work on real vellum or can work on watercolor paper if they so choose. The class will include a field trip and conservation education.

Our 2013 Conference will be held at the College of the Atlantic, a small college occupying 35 acres and located on the ocean on Mount Desert Island in the seaside town of Bar Harbor. The college is renowned for its programs in environmental and marine studies. The Denver Botanic Gardens and the GNSI are pleased to announce a premier juried exhibition opportunity for GNSI members only, highlighting the subject matter of plants, birds, and pollinators. Subjects may include plants only or animals only (birds, mammals, insects, reptiles & amphibians, etc), but judging weight will be given to images that emphasize plants and their relationships with their pollinators.

Original art only (includes prints of digital works) in 2- or 3-dimensions. Jurying emphasis will be on both artistic excellence and scientific accuracy.
